A Special Birthday Gift

Mrs. Brockle's birthday was coming up and Bobby Brockle and his little sister Betsy wanted to give their mother the best gift ever. They decided that a basket of nuts and berries from the forest would be best. So the next day Bobby and Betsy set of very early for the woods. They took the biggest basket they could find and planned to fill it all up. Bobby and Betsy couldn't wait to give their mother her special birthday gift.

Bobby and Betsy walked deeper and deeper into the forest, trying to fill the basket. Suddenly, they realized that they were in a part of the forest that they had never seen before. Bobby and Betsy sat under a tree and wondered about how they were going to get home. They knew their mother would be worried about them. Betsy start to cry. Suddenly a deep voice said, "Why are you crying?"

Bobby and Betsy looked up to see Mr. Bear. He was said to be the biggest and meanest person in the forest. Bobby and Betsy were too frightened to answer. "Are you lost?" Mr. Bear asked. Bobby and Betsy nodded. "Well, first I had better take you back to my cottage and give you some soup. Then I will show you back to Toadstool Village." So off they all went to Mr. Bear's house.

Mr. Bear gave them big bowls of delicious soup. Once they had finished their soup, Mr. Bear led Bobby and Betsy back to Toadstool Village. He even gave them a big jar of honey to give to their mother for her birthday.

"Mr. Bear is nice after all. What an exciting day," Bobby said, but little did he know another adventure was just around the corner.
